Leonardo DRS wins $579 million contract for advanced thermal weapon sights

ARLINGTON, VA, OCTOBER 10, 2022 ̶ Leonardo DRS, Inc. (“DRS”) today announced that it has been awarded a contract to produce its next-generation thermal sights for the United States military. The US Army Contracting Command fixed-price contract is valued at $579 million over five years.

Leonardo DRS Electro-Optical Infrared Systems (EOIS) will produce advanced Weapon Family Sight – Individual (FWS-I) systems for its US Army customer. Utilizing DRS’ uncooled thermal imaging technology, FWS-I is a self-contained, clip-on weapon sight that connects wirelessly to helmet-mounted vision systems, including Enhanced Night Vision Goggles (ENVG- B) and the next-generation integrated visual. augmentation system (IVAS) and provides rapid target acquisition capabilities to the soldier. It gives users the ability to acquire targets day or night and in smoke or fog, providing strategic and tactical advantages to the soldier.

The contract was originally awarded on April 28, 2022.

At the heart of the technology are decades of Leonardo DRS experience in the field of uncooled thermal weapon systems. The FWS-I uses a proprietary vanadium oxide micro-electromechanical focal plane array that requires no visible light to operate.

The Leonardo DRS EOIS business is part of the Advanced Sensing and Computing segment, which has a large installed base in the US military. Production of the Sight-Individual family of weapons will take place at the company’s Infrared Electro-Optical Systems facility in Melbourne, Florida.
