How to Leave a Team on Microsoft Teams

Microsoft’s popular business collaboration platform is a popular choice for businesses, volunteer projects, and more, especially if you’re already using Office 365 features. The ability to quickly join a group; find the right teams; and starting chat channels, chats or videos is a bonus for all users.

But sometimes your time with a particular team is over. Maybe it was a temporary project, maybe you’re moving on, or maybe you’re changing teams to better reflect the structure of an organization. When this happens, it’s important to know how to quickly leave a team you work with. Here’s how.

How to leave a Microsoft team

Before you start, it’s a good idea to make sure you’re supposed to leave a team or have permission from a team owner to do so. Leaving and rejoining teams without letting others know can be confusing.

Step 1: Sign in to Microsoft Teams and select the Teams icon from the left menu. Go to the team you want to leave.

2nd step: To the right of the team name, you will see a three dot ellipsis icon. Select it to open the Teams menu. Here you’ll see a variety of options, including hiding the team (if you don’t want to leave it yet) and managing the team if you’re the owner of the team. Don’t confuse this with team channel drop-down menus, which are subtitles within the team itself and don’t include the option to leave.

Exit the Microsoft Teams menu.

Step 3: Select Leave the team. Confirm that you want to leave. The team will usually disappear from your Teams menu without further steps.

Confirm that you are leaving the Microsoft team.

Step 4: The big exception to this process is to leave an org-wide org or task force entirely that your admin may have created. You cannot leave them on your own. You will need to contact your administrator and ask them to delete you if they have not already done so.

Leave Microsoft Teams in iOS.

Leave a Microsoft Team on mobile

Leaving a Microsoft Team works a little differently on mobile devices, so keep that in mind. If you’re on an iOS device like an iPhone, the menu will look very similar, except the team list will be at the bottom instead of on the side. Previous versions of iOS Teams didn’t allow you to leave a team, but this has since been updated, so the process should be the same.

It’s also similar for Teams on an Android device, where you look for the More options dots next to a team name to choose from. Leave the team.

Important Tips for Leaving a Microsoft Team

  • When you permanently leave a team, you will no longer receive notifications associated with that team. This includes any updates the team may poll or tag in channels. However, your chat options in Teams should still work, so as long as someone is in your Teams organization, you should still be able to contact them one-on-one. However, team-wide video meetings will likely no longer be available to you.

  • Leaving a team does not delete any messages or content you have sent to that team. All of your old messages will still be available to team members.

  • Even when you leave a team, you are still part of the organization that created the team. If you also want to leave the organization, you can visit your My groups section in the apps and select your profile to choose to leave the organization. This isn’t available in all Teams setups, so if you don’t see this option, contact your admin to learn more.

  • In some cases, you will not be able to leave a team that is not part of the organization. For example, students using the education version of Microsoft Teams will not be able to leave a team on their own. If you’re the last person on a team and have been automatically made a team owner or similar manager, you may not be able to leave a team until you delete it entirely.

  • If you’re moving to a new team as part of a restructure, make sure you have the necessary information to join or a direct invite before you leave your old team. Not all teams are public, and many require invites or codes to join.
