Stress Level Zero is launching its virtual reality game Bonelab today as the latest entry in its experimental physics series.
The creator of the previous title Boneworks is back with physics-first simulated gameplay and interaction. And one of the great things about Bonelab is that you can modify it. The new title debuts on Meta’s Meta Quest 2 headset and other PC VR headsets.
The company said the first section of the game provides a quick overview of basic concepts and combat before entering the main lab environment where the options open up. Starting from the lab, players can try out a variety of different levels to play and explore. After playing at least three levels, players can solve a crane puzzle and then find a way to the third part of the game.
The final sequence of levels may take some time and will introduce a variety of new concepts. After that, players can keep returning to a physical sandbox, which contains a plethora of unlockables.
The layered narrative of Bonelab is in line with that of Boneworks. Stress Level Zero might be familiar to early VR fans, as it created Hover Junkers in 2016.
Boneworks was originally released in 2019. This title won Steam’s Best of VR Platinum award in 2019 and every year since.
The title represents the continued evolution of Stress Level Zero’s Marrow1 VR physics base, which was originally developed for Boneworks. By developing and refining mechanics, Bonelab pushes simulation further by providing seamless transition between avatars, vehicles, and improved physics tuning, the company said.
The basic idea is that you explore a mysterious laboratory full of weapons, enemies, challenges and secrets. You must escape your reality and escape your death sentence to be an outcast. You can also explore user-generated levels.
You must discover a path to an underground research facility hidden beneath the depths of MythOS City. Players will encounter a series of challenging experiences and discoveries throughout the adventure. Using a variety of physical ranged, melee, and exotic weapons, players must battle enemies and solve puzzles with a full arsenal. Importing custom avatars allows players to experience more gameplay by providing corresponding physical stat modifications.
At the same time, next-generation virtual reality gaming devices are now selling in volume. Last year, Oculus alone sold more VR headsets than Microsoft sold Xboxes. According to market researcher IDC, annual sales of VR devices globally increased by more than 92% in 2021, with annual shipments expected to reach 50 million units by 2026. Of course, that might be tougher now. that Meta, hit by rising inflation and parts shortages, have raised the price of Meta Quest 2 headsets by $100 for this fall.
